Stevenson High School Student Hit in Crosswalk Raises Questions About Pedestrian Safety Near Sterling Heights Schools

At about 7:30 a.m. July 14, a Stevenson High School student was struck by a northbound vehicle while crossing Dodge Park Road at Falcon Drive — in a marked crosswalk, WXYZ reported.

The student suffered a broken pelvis, required surgery and was taken to a local hospital in stable condition. For families who send children along Dodge Park Road each morning, the crash poses a blunt question: If a student can be seriously hurt in a marked crosswalk, what protection does that crossing provide?

Police said speed, alcohol and drugs do not appear to have been factors, and the investigation is still underway. That puts renewed attention on the crossing itself — whether drivers and students have enough visibility, time and room to avoid a collision on a busy road during the morning commute.

Stevenson High School sits on Dodge Park Road in Sterling Heights. The city has tested curb extensions and a painted crosswalk as trial safety measures in the Stevenson area, but it remains unclear what permanent pedestrian-safety infrastructure is in place at Falcon Drive or whether those trial measures are still there. That is the central accountability question for residents: Has the city addressed a known risk on a school route, or are students still depending mainly on painted lines and drivers noticing them in time?

Sterling Heights city officials did not respond to questions about planned infrastructure improvements at the crosswalk or what data from the trial safety measures revealed. School district officials did not announce immediate safety measures or changes to student pedestrian routes.

Until those answers come, the marked crossing at Falcon Drive remains a daily reminder that painted lines alone did not keep a Stevenson student from suffering a life-altering injury.
